‘Unlocking Patent Law: Exploring IP Career Paths’ Our principal, Ms. Pauli Wong, was invited to speak at the Hong Kong Life Sciences Society (HKLSS) Summer Internship Program 2024 on “Unlocking Patent Law: Exploring IP Career Paths” in July. This program aims to cultivate young talents to drive life sciences innovation. In addition, she participated in the discussion session titled “Evolving Landscape – Investment Outlook for the Healthcare and Life Sciences Sectors” alongside Mr. Tian Tan, the Vice President of NF Trinity. Pauli shared her career journey becoming a patent attorney at Eagle IP, from an HKU biotech graduate and a scientist with CK Life Sciences. She provided an introduction to intellectual property, particularly patents, and life sciences challenges we are facing, and how to pursue a career path in patent law. By sharing her own experiences, Pauli offered valuable insights and guidance to the aspiring interns to appreciate the importance of IP and consider a career path in patent law.

Pauli provided a comprehensive IP and patent overview, discussed the unique IP issues in life sciences amidst the dynamic landscape of the Greater Bay Area, and how to start a career path in patent law. Attendees including students, researchers and professors found her talk very informative and insightful, and gave very positive feedback. We are happy to help HK innovators gain a better appreciation of the importance and complexities of strategic thinking and leveraging IPs especially patents.

‘Protecting Therapeutics in China: Navigating Recent Major Updates to the Chinese Patent Law, including PTA, PTE, patent linkage, and more’ Our President and Managing Director, Ms. Jennifer Che, gave a talk at the LSPN Spring 2024 at Boston about strategies for protecting therapeutics in China, touching upon topics like PTE, patent linkage, data exclusivity, how to deal with IP arising in China, and a very interesting recent case in China about semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) that highlighted the nuanced differences in what kind of post filing data can be accepted by the China patent office. Jennifer enjoyed “talking shop” with so many different patent attorneys from all over bringing their own diverse perspectives, with all the connections made at such a great conference.

Unlock the Life & Health Sciences Potential through Innovation On Friday, October 13, 2023, our Managing Director Ms. Jennifer Che participated as a panelist in InvestHK’s event “Unlock the Life & Health Sciences Potential through Innovation”. Keynote speeches focused on Hong Kong’s strengths in the life sciences (good medical schools, strong research) and also Hong Kong’s challenges bridging the gap between fundamental research and commercial products. The panel discussion centered around “Hong Kong as a life and health technology innovation hub.” Moderated by Dr. Josephine Au from InvestHK, the other panel members included Ir. Eric Chan from Hong Kong Cyberport Management Co. Ltd., Dr. Grace Lau from HKSTP Institute of Translational Research, Ms. Simone Song from ORI Capital and Mr. Henry Yau from HKU Clinical Trials Centre. Jennifer shared about Hong Kong’s uniqueness as a place to find IP experts having international qualifications as well as cross-border experience. She also expressed frustration at how many HK companies still don’t value the importance of good IP strategy (and are unwilling to invest in such matters), which hurts them when they enter the international stage down the road. It was an enlightening discussion and valuable to hear various people’s thoughts on the future of Hong Kong in the life & health sciences area.

Bright Ideas, Strong Barriers: A Patenting Masterclass On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, we teamed up with Cyberport, HKMHDIA, and UMP Innov Centre to host the “Bright Ideas, Strong Barriers: A Patenting Masterclass” seminar, both in-person and online. Jennifer, our Managing Director, and Pauli, our Principal, took the stage and delivered presentations on the fundamentals of intellectual property (IP) and the challenges faced in MedTech/Healthcare innovation within the GBA and China. We were privileged to have a distinguished panel of experts who generously shared their experiences and insights on the topic of “MedTech Innovations and Intellectual Property Protection.” Our esteemed panelists included Ronnie Li from UMP Healthcare Group as the moderator, Dr. Lydia Leung from HKMHDIA and Belun Technology, Mr. Justin Chan from Gense Technologies, Ms. Kim Chow from LinkAIQ, and our very own Managing Director, Ms. Jennifer Che. At Eagle IP Limited, our mission is to assist both local and foreign inventors in safeguarding their creations and business endeavors. Eagle IP was thrilled to represent the city of #HongKong as host at the @AIPLA Women in IP Global Networking event #WIPNE last Thursday. Over dinner and drinks in Sheung Wan, a group of very accomplished Hong Kong women in IP each used their voices to share stories about their career paths, dreams, lessons learned, and inspiration words for the next generation. It was amazing to re-connect with old colleagues, partners, friends, and even finally meet face-to-face (for the first time!) people we’d only known through video calls during the pandemic. Thank you so much to each person who attended. We hope for more opportunities for women in IP to connect in Hong Kong, and also around the world.

The 5th Annual US-China IP Conference Dr. Jacqueline Lui, President of Eagle IP Group, spoke at the Breakout Session on Patent Commercialization at the 5th Annual US-China IP Conference in Shenzhen. The conference was an annual event co-hosted by China Renmin University IP Academy, Berkeley Center for Law and Technology and Loyola Law School Los Angeles. The 5th US-China IP Conference, entitled “Intellectual Property and Economic Transformation”, brought together senior policymakers, judges, academics and international practitioners from China and the United States to discuss five important topics: (1) Recent Developments in Trade Secrets Law; (2) Privacy Protection under the Information Age; (3) Recent Developments in Entertainment Law; (4) Patent Commercialization; and (5) Brand Protection.
